Livingston County Commission

Job Description 

The Livingston County Board of Commissioners is the chief policy making body of County government. It has nine members elected every two years and is assisted by a large staff which carries out the day-to-day work of running the county. 

The Board’s duties include:

      --Developing the county budget each year

      --Seeing that tax assessments throughout the county are equal

      --Appointing the County Administrator and members of boards and commission

      --Setting the pay for all elected and appointed officials and other employees

      --Establishing personnel policies for many county departments

      --Making sure the county has buildings and equipment necessary for its   operations

      --Authorizing new programs or ending existing ones

      --Monitoring County expenditures and receiving and settling claims against the County

      --Seeing that staff audits monthly bills as required by statute

      --Reviewing and adopting grants

      --Providing for County participation in several multi-County human service and regional planning programs

    --Assisting local units of government, through intergovernmental contracts, in areas of public works, human services, law enforcement, etc., and sometimes granting the full faith and credit of the County to secure borrowing for local projects.  

The board also is supposed to oversee county agencies and make sure they are well run.  

The county board normally meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Monday of every month. in the Board Chambers located on the second floor of the Administration Building at 304 E. Grand River, Howell, Michigan. 

Board members also serve on committees. The Livingston County Committee of the Whole normally meets at 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday of each month and adjourns into subcommittees. The Livingston County Finance Committee normally meets at 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

      District 5 -- Howell City, Precincts 1, 2, 3; Howell Township, Precinct 1; all of Conway and Cohoctah Townships. Seat now held by Republican Donald S. Parker.

      District 6 – All of Putnam Township,  Marion Township Precincts 2&3, Genoa Township Precincts 5 & 12, and Hamburg Township Precinct 3. Seat now held by Republican Steven Williams.

      District 7 --All of Brighton City, and  Genoa Township, Precincts 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10. Seat now held by Republican Carol Griffith.

      District 8 -- Hamburg Township, Precincts 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8. Seat now held by Republican Dennis Dolan.

      District 9 -- All of Green Oak Township and Precinct 5 of Brighton Township. Seat now held by Republican Jack LaBelle.
